Starting yesterday, about 3,200 bakeries went on an open strike in the Tunisian capital to demand that the government pay financial dues for the year 2021, in exchange for preparing bread, according to the Bakery Owners Syndicate.

The syndicate demands that the authorities must pay 14 months of dues in return for subsidizing the bread industry, according to press statements by an official in this union, according to Agence France-Presse( AFP).

The syndicate confirmed that 95 percent of bakeries benefiting from bread subsidies from the government closed their doors yesterday, stressing that they will continue to stop working until an agreement is reached.

About 1,200 bakeries scattered throughout the country that is not interested in government support continue their work.

It is worth noting that Tunisia is witnessing an ongoing economic crisis.

The country suffers from a lack of some basic foodstuffs, such as sugar and milk, almost monthly.
