On Thursday, ABC News reported that US President Donald Trump is expected to take major steps this week to disband the US Department of Education.
He aims to direct his newly-appointed Secertary of Education Linda McMahon to dissolve the department by executive order.
A draft of the executive order calls on Education Secretary Linda McMahon to facilitate a department closure by taking all necessary steps "permitted by law," the sources said.
This step would need congressional approval, which needs 60 Senate votes.
McMahon previously backed Trump's vision, asserting that she would need Congress to carry out this step.
She said: "We'd like to do this right," adding: "That certainly does require congressional action."
