US President Donald Trump described the Supreme Court’s decision to extend the voting period as “crazy,” stressing the need for the elections to end on the 3rd of November.
Trump wrote in a tweet: "This decision is crazy and very awful for our country, can we imagine what will happen in nine days? The elections must end on the 3rd of November."
The Supreme Court allowed an extension of the deadline to accept ballot papers for the US presidential elections by mail in North Carolina and rejected a request from Trump's headquarters to cancel the extension.
Several US states plan to count the votes that have been delivered by mail within a few days after the election.
With that, the court ruling means that the state can count votes in the mail up to nine days after the vote as long as they are postmarked by Election Day.
This comes after the US Senate voted, on Monday, by a majority to choose Amy Connie Barrett, the candidate of US President Donald Trump to fill the vacant position on the Supreme Court.
While Barrett was swearing the oath, Trump said: "I know you will make us all extremely proud."
He also added: "The appointment of Amy Connie Barrett to the Supreme Court is a historic day for the United States. Our country owes it to the leader of the Republican majority in the Senate as well as to the head of the House Judiciary Committee."
