Former US President Donald Trump has claimed that he is "completely innocent" and a victim of "political persecution" after he became the first former president in American history to face a criminal indictment over paying a pornographic actress.

And the American New York Daily News reported that the former president, who is holed up in his club in the Mar-a-Lago resort, in Florida, declared his innocence in a lengthy statement issued minutes after reports emerged that a grand jury in Manhattan was investigating a case of financial payments to silence porn actress Stormy Daniels voted in favor of filing a criminal indictment against him.

"The Democrats lied, cheated, and stole in their obsession with trying to 'get Trump', but now they have done the unthinkable - accusing a completely innocent person of blatant interference in the election," said Trump, who is considered the Republican Party's leading candidate to run for the 2024 presidential election.

Trump is expected to be tried on the charges against him in Manhattan Criminal Court. It is not yet clear when the accused will be summoned to court to respond to what is attributed to him.
