Trump Becomes 11th US President Failed to Win Re-election

This evening, Donald Trump joined the list of 10th incumbent presidents in the US history who failed to win re-election. He was defeated by his rival Presidential candidate Joe Biden, who became the 46th US President.

The position of US President was established in 1789, since then, 45 presidents have ruled the United States so far.

According to the US Constitution, presidents are only allowed to rule for two terms of 4 years each, and both sexes are entitled to hold this position, but so far only men have held the position.

Out of the 45 presidents who ruled the United States, only 11 presidents failed to win re-election.

Here's is the full list of the 11 US presidents who failed to secure a second term in office:

1- John Adams (1797-1801)

He was the US's first vice president and second president, failed to win a second term in the 1800 election.

Adams, a Federalist, was defeated by Thomas Jefferson, a Democratic-Republican.

During his presidency, Adams became involved in a quasi-war with France after seizing a merchant ship in New York City harbor, which caused him to lose his second term.

2- John Quincy Adams (1825-1829)

He was the son of President John Adams. He did not win reelection in 1828. after he was defeated by Andrew Jackson.

During his presidency, there were many pisions in his Republican-Democratic Party, which prevented him from winning a second term. The party split after Adams defeat.

3-Martin Van Buren (1837-1841)

Martin Van Buren lost the 1840 election to William Henry Harrison.

4- Grover Cleveland (1885-1889)

Grover Cleveland lost the election of 1888 to Benjamin Harrison.

Cleveland (Democrat) was the 22nd president after winning US elections in 1884, but he lost the second term and managed to win the presidency again in 1892, becoming the 24th president of the United States.

 

5-Benjamin Harrison (1889-1893)

Benjamin Harrison defeated Grover Cleveland in the 1888 election, despite losing the popular vote.

6-William Howard Taft (1909-1913)

William Howard Taft was defeated by Woodrow Wilson in the 1912 election.

 

7- Herbert Hoover (1929-1933).

Herbert Hoover was defeated by Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1932 election.

Hoover was president at the onset of the Great Depression, and failed to rise to the task of addressing the economic calamity.

Herbert Hoover was elected President of the United States in 1928 and attempted to rebuild the country’s economy after the stock market crash of 1929.

By the time the second state election came in 1932, the US economy was still in decline, losing to Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

8- Gerald Ford (1974-1977)

Gerald Ford lost the 1976 election to Jimmy Carter after coming to power during one of the most tumultuous decades of the 20th century for the US.

9- Jimmy Carter (1977-1981)

Carter, a Democrat, served as president from 1977 to 1981 but lost in the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan.

10- George H.W. Bush (1989-1993)

George   Bush failed to be re-elected for a second term when Democrat Bill Clinton defeated him in the 1992 election.

Bush was the 41st President of the United States and was director of the CIA from 1976 to 1980.

11- Donald  J. Trump

Trump lost to his Democratic rival Joe Biden after the announcement of most of the results of the presidential elections in the states.

He has only served one term as President of the USA.

But Barak Obama made history in his swearing oath of office as the 44th president of the United States, becoming the second president after Franklin Roosevelt who swore the oath 4 times.

He was also the seventh president in US history to be sworn in for a second term on a Sunday although it is the weekly holiday.
