The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics to Japanese-born American Syukuro Manabe, German Klaus Hasselmann, and Italian Giorgio Parisi “for groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex physical systems.”

"Complex systems are chaotic and difficult to understand," the Swedish Academy said in a statement. "This year's award honors new methods of describing them and predicting their long-term behavior."
