UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that any large-scale Israeli military operation in Rafah would mean the end of the UN-led relief operation for the residents of the Strip. He called on the international community to fulfill its primary responsibility to protect and promote human rights everywhere.
The Secretary-General's call came in his speech before the Human Rights Council at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, at the opening of its fifty-fifth session. Guterres said that expanding the Israeli ground military operation in southern Gaza would only bring more fear to more than a million Palestinian civilians seeking safety in the region, and would put “the final nail in the coffin of humanitarian aid programs.”
