The Hill, a US daily, the newspaper said that Nancy Pelosi's decision to step down from the leadership of the House of Representatives (HoR) the next session represents a watershed moment in American politics, and the latest tremors across Congress in which she led her party for two decades.

The newspaper pointed out that this decision has broad repercussions for the work of the Capitol, as it promises to pave the way for a younger generation of Democratic leaders who will take charge with the Republicans who will control the HoR while changing the party's image after 20 years of Pelosi's leadership.

While announcing her decision yesterday, Thursday, Pelosi said that the time has come for younger leaders to emerge.

And the 83-year-old head of the Democratic majority in the HoR, Steny Hoyer, announced his support for Representative Hakeem Jeffress of New York, 52, who is considering him as the likely candidate to succeed Pelosi.

And if Hakeem Jeffress succeeds Pelosi, he will be the first man of African descent to assume this leadership role, whether in the House of Representatives or the Senate.
