The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, says that The Sharia tends towards strictness in the matter of divorce and resorts to it only when it is deemed necessary.
He added : Divorce is permissible if the relationship between the spouses has become impossible for any reason, and this is a case that has no fixed standard as it varies from one husband and wife to another.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam, added :The Quran encourages husbands to preserve their matrimonial home, exercise restraint with their wives, and avoid divorcing them even if they do something that causes them to dislike them. Affection, empathy, and mercy are the three fundamental pillars upon which any marriage is built.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam, says : The word 'spouse' is used in the Quran to refer to both the husband and the wife, which is a remarkable indication of the unity of the husband and his wife in name and designation.
