The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, says that The basis for divorce is impermissibility unless there is a serious need for it to take place. It should not be regarded as a desire for change or falling in love with another woman or any similar erratic desires.
He added : The opinion supported by Prophetic hadiths and moral human values, which form the backbone of all legislations, is that the default ruling regarding divorce is that it is impermissible unless there is a need for it; and that such a need should render marital life inconceivable.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam, added : Through the restriction of divorce to three utterances, Islam successfully tackled reckless and frequent divorces. In this system, the husband has the ability to retract the first two divorce utterances and get back with his wife within her waiting period. However, if the waiting period expires or the husband utters a third divorce, his wife will no longer be considered lawful to him.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam, says : Almighty Allah built the order of the universe on the basis of the quintessential male-female family model. Any deviation from that, beyond the divinely-set framework, would tamper with the cosmos that can destroy the human race and indeed the entire existence of the universe.
