The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, says that Islam recognizes several legitimate rights for spouses, the most important of which are the right to keep marital secrets and the right to be treated with affection and mercy in order to protect the family from anything that may disrupt its stability.
He added : The responsibility of a man to financially support his family is not just a material responsibility! In a family, providing financial support is a visible act of worship, but its essence is to seek closeness to Allah.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam, added : If a husband desires to obtain his rights, he must fulfill his obligations, as every right corresponds to a duty. Islam has granted several rights to the wife, including that her husband should be patient with her, treat her kindly, be fair in his dealings with her, and consult her on personal and family matters.
Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam, says : The husband has the right to expect his wife to be understanding of his status during both hardship and ease. If the husband is stingy, the wife is allowed to take money from his wealth without his consent to spend on herself and her children, provided that no harm is caused.
He added : Islam has granted the husband the right to expect his wife's obedience and kindness, as well as the responsibility of maintaining his household and family whether he is present or absent
