At least 17 soldiers were killed in an ambush set up by a "group of armed terrorists" in southeastern Niger on the border with Mali, according to a new toll announced, by the Niger Defense Ministry.
The ministry said, "The toll as of February 17, 2023, in the ranks of the Nigerien armed forces, has become 17 dead, 13 wounded, and 12 missing," explaining that "the search operations are continuing." An official report said that 10 people had been recently killed.
The ministry stated that 5 military vehicles were “charred” and “others were stolen.” The new report did not specify how many attackers were killed in response.
However, the ministry confirms that they removed "a number of corpses" during their withdrawal. And it was the ministry
France condemned the attack in the strongest terms, and the French Foreign Ministry expressed its full solidarity with the authorities and people of Niger.
Niger is one of the options available to reposition French special forces that were expelled by the ruling military junta in neighboring Burkina Faso.
