Eleven civilians, including women and children, were killed and more than 30 were injured when a landmine exploded in a pickup truck Saturday near Daraa in southern Syria, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

Explosions left in fields, roads, or even inside buildings by all parties to the decade-long Syrian conflict have injured thousands of civilians and killed hundreds of them. Since the beginning of 2020, about 124 people were killed in such explosions.

"Eleven people, including five children under 16 and three women, were killed and around 34 others were injured when a landmine exploded while their pickup truck was passing by," the observatory for human rights said.

The observatory noted that some of the injured were in critical condition and transferred to one of the hospitals in Damascus.

It indicated that the truck was carrying workers from Dayr al 'Adas in northern Daraa.

The UN said that the mines are scattered in one of three towns in the country.

In 2020, Syria overtook Afghanistan as the country with the highest number of recorded casualties from landmines and explosive remnants of war, with 2,729 people killed or wounded, according to the landmine monitor, which was published at the end of 2021.

In 2021, 241 civilians were killed and 128 wounded by explosive remnants across the country.

Syria’s war is estimated to have killed nearly half a million people, caused massive damage to the infrastructure, and displaced more than half of the population inside and outside the country.
