Starting January 1, Switzerland officially implements a nationwide ban on face coverings in public spaces, including the niqab and burqa.
The decision stems from a 2021 referendum where 51.2% of Swiss voters supported restrictions on face coverings, citing the need to uphold social interaction and Swiss cultural values.
Previously, such bans were enforced only in the cantons of St. Gallen and Ticino. The new law extends the prohibition to all public areas across Switzerland, including streets, markets, public transport, and museums.
It applies not only to religious garments like the niqab and burqa but also to other face coverings, such as masks worn by football fans.
The law mandates compliance, with local authorities overseeing enforcement. Violators face fines ranging from 100 to 1,000 Swiss francs (approximately $110 to $1,100 USD).
