Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billström announced his resignation on Wednesday, bringing an end to his political career.
Billström, who has held his position since October 2022, informed Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of his decision to leave both his post and his seat in the Swedish Parliament as it prepares to resume next week.
At 50 years old, Billström expressed that his next steps remain uncertain, though he is looking forward to contributing in different fields outside of politics.
During his time as Foreign Minister, he played a critical role in Sweden’s efforts to join NATO, overcoming significant obstacles by convincing both Turkey and Hungary to drop their objections to the country's membership.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson offered his well-wishes to Billström for his future endeavors, although he has yet to announce who will succeed him as Foreign Minister.
The resignation marks a significant change for Sweden’s foreign policy team as the country continues its active role in European and global diplomacy.
