Sweden to Hold Donor Conference to Support Turkiye, Syria in Brussels

Sweden’s Foreign Minister Tobias Billström announced his country's intention to hold an international conference to support Turkiye and Syria after the deadly earthquake on March 16 in Brussels.

"Sweden is mobilizing its efforts to support Turkiye and Syria by coordinating an international fund-raising conference on March 16 in Brussels," Billstrom said, in press statements ahead of the start of the EU foreign ministers' meetings in Brussels.

"We are doing this with the European Commission, and the aim is to increase additional support for the people of Turkiye and Syria," he added.

A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck southern Turkiye and northern Syria at dawn on Monday, February 6, while the aftershocks reached other countries in the region, and were felt by residents in Lebanon, Iraq, and Egypt.

The quake killed 41,020 people in Turkiye, according to the latest count from the country's Disaster and Emergency Management Agency.

While the Syrian government announced that the death toll from the earthquake in Syria reached 1,414 deaths and 2,357 injured.
