Sweden has announced it will no longer fund the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), marking a significant shift in its humanitarian aid strategy.
The decision was confirmed by Benjamin Dousa, Sweden's minister responsible for international aid, in a statement to TV4 on Friday.
Dousa explained that Sweden intends to redirect its aid to Gaza through alternative channels. He cited Israel's impending ban on UNRWA operations, set to take effect in late January, as a major factor behind the decision.
The ban has created logistical challenges for continuing support via the agency.
Israel has repeatedly accused UNRWA staff of involvement in attacks by Hamas, including the October 7, 2023, assault that escalated into the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
These allegations have further complicated the agency’s operations in the region.
Despite ending UNRWA funding, Sweden plans to increase its humanitarian assistance to Gaza in 2024.
Dousa highlighted several organizations, including the United Nations World Food Programme, that could provide viable alternatives for delivering aid to the Palestinian population.
Meanwhile, the United Nations General Assembly recently expressed strong support for UNRWA, urging Israel to respect the agency's mandate and allow its operations to continue without restrictions.
