The Straits Times reported on Wednesday that Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the former president of Sri Lanka, would extend his stay in Singapore by an additional 14 days.
Rajapaksa is anticipated to return to Sri Lanka from Singapore, according to Bandula Gunawardena, the Cabinet spokesman, who made the announcement during a press briefing on Tuesday in Colombo.
Rajapaksa, according to The Straits Times, landed in Singapore from the Malpes on July 14 and was given a 14-day visit pass at Changi Airport. He initially resided in a hotel in the heart of the city but is thought to have moved to a private home.
On July 14, the Singaporean Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Rajapaksa had not requested refuge and had not been granted any. Singapore routinely denies bids for asylum, the ministry stated.
On July 15, Rajapaksa's formal resignation was announced by Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament.
