The Egyptian public prosecution said Saturday that people who intentionally spread rumors and fake news about the coronavirus online may be imprisoned up to two years and fined between EGP 100,000 and 300,000 in accordance with the law.
In a statement, the prosecution said that legal action will be taken in conformity with articles no. (27) and (38) of the criminal law.
The prosecution further added that if the rumormongers seek to destabilize the country, disturb public order or stir up panic among citizens, they will be sentenced to aggravated imprisonment.
The decision comes after arresting many persons who spread fake news about the COVID-19 in Egypt, claiming the state can't deal with the deadly virus outbreak.
