Spain has initiated the process to end a contract for ammunition procurement from an Israeli company for Spain’s Civil Guard, according to an announcement by Spain’s Ministry of Interior.
In a statement released Tuesday, the ministry confirmed that the contract termination involves 9x19 mm PB NATO cartridges intended for the Civil Guard.
The initial contract was put out for bidding on February 21, 2024, with the decision to terminate reached on October 21, 2024. Out of the three scheduled deliveries, two were awarded to the Israeli company.
This move follows a broader stance taken by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who recently urged the European Commission to consider suspending the EU-Israel Free Trade Agreement in light of Israel’s actions in Gaza and Lebanon.
Sanchez has also called on the international community to halt arms exports to Israel, citing escalating tensions in the Middle East.
