Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced the resumption of a large-scale military operation to eliminate the remnants of terrorist militias in the south of the country.
Mahmoud’s remarks came during the visit to the city of Baidoa, the interim seat of the Southwest Regional Government, following the launch of a conference on reconciliation in the state of the southwest, where the Somali president stressed that the terrorist militias linked to al-Qaeda are the only enemy of his country and people, and forces must be combined to eliminate the terrorists, according to the Somali news agency.
Sheikh Mahmoud added that the second aspect of the military operations will start from the state of the southwest, which has equipped all the local forces to move with the Somali army toward the strongholds of the remnants of the rebels and work to restore rural areas controlled by the militias.
And the Somali president indicated that there are great efforts to open safe passages between the capital, Mogadishu, and other cities in the states of Southwest and Jubbaland.
