"The Assiut Oil Refining Complex is one of the state’s strategic projects within the framework of Upper Egypt’s development plans," said Rady.
It is the largest petroleum complex in Upper Egypt.
It aims to secure oil supplies to the people of Upper Egypt and save the cost of transporting it from the existing refineries in Cairo, Alexandria, and Suez to the various regions of Upper Egypt.
Assiut is the capital of the modern Assiut Governorate in Egypt. It was built close to the ancient city of the same name, which is situated nearby.
It has almost 400,000 inhabitants. It is also home to the Assiut University, one of the largest universities in Egypt, to the Assiut Barrage, and to the Lillian Trasher Orphanage.
“President Sisi called for the regular evaluation of the performance and results of Upper Egypt development efforts with the aim of developing the mechanisms and discovering the development opportunities inherent in the fields of agriculture, handicrafts and the distinguished productivity for which the people of Upper Egypt are famous,” said Rady in previous statements in September.
Moreover, President Sisi called for speeding up the implementation of the infrastructure projects within the framework of the program, including road, sanitation, electricity and drinking water projects.
In this context, His Excellency called for devoting attention to promoting the concept of sustainable rural development and integrated urban development for the good of the people of the governorates and villages in Upper Egypt.
