President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi made it a point to extend his greetings to a group of outstanding police officers and their families during the celebration of Police Day 2024 organized by the Ministry of Interior.
Police Day commemorates the memory of the police battle that took place on the morning of Friday, January 25, 1952.
During this historical event, British Commander Brigadier Axsam issued a warning to the Egyptian communication officer in the Suez Canal region, instructing him to hand over Egyptian police weapons to the British forces and evacuate the Ismailia region.
The Egyptian police, under the leadership of the Minister of Interior at the time, Fouad Serag El Din, refused the British warning and chose to resist rather than surrender.
This incident played a crucial role in sparking the rebellion among the police forces, also known as the 'Bloc of the System,' leading to a siege of the city and dividing it into the Arab and French districts, with barbed wire separating the two areas, preventing access to the foreigners' residential zone.
These events were not the sole factors that led to the outbreak of the battle. The cancellation of the 1936 Treaty on October 8, 1951, further incensed Britain, as it viewed the treaty's annulment as a prelude to war against the Egyptians.
The treaty had given the British colonial power a strong grip over Egyptian cities, including those in the Suez Canal region, which served as a major center for British military camps. Consequently, massive demonstrations erupted, demanding the departure of the British colonial forces.
On this occasion, President Sisi took the opportunity to salute the dedicated police officers who have continued to safeguard Egypt's security and uphold the nation's sovereignty.
The celebration of Police Day serves as a reminder of the police force's historical role in preserving Egypt's independence and protecting its citizens.
