Sisi and EU's Von Der Leyen Discuss Bilateral Ties, Ukraine

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received a phone call on Sunday from the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and discussed issues of mutual interest, according to Presidency Spokesperson Bassam Rady.

Sisi and Von der Leyen tackled a multitude of dossiers and issues of mutual interest, primarily ways to enhance relations between Egypt and the EU across all levels, as well as coordination efforts with regard to the main regional and international issues.

"They also exchanged views on ways to address the global repercussions of the Ukrainian crisis, particularly with regard to energy supply in its various forms, food security as well as disruption in supply chains," Rady said.

There was an agreement on the need for regular coordination between the two sides during the coming period so as crystalize joint initiatives and efforts in this regard.

On her part, Von der Leyen expressed the European Union's appreciation for the strong and distinguished relations with Egypt.

She stressed the Union's desire to further promote cooperation with Egypt at various levels, in light of the common interest in addressing the challenges facing the Eastern Mediterranean and given Egypt’s pivotal role in the Middle East and Africa.

In the meantime, Sisi affirmed Egypt's keenness to boost relations with the European Union as it is a strategic partner to Egypt in various fields.

He also stressed Egypt’s keenness to promote coordination and consultation on regional and international issues and challenges facing the two parties, expressing his aspiration to expand cooperation with the European Union in various fields.

During the call, Sisi and Von der Leyen discussed various aspects of the relationship between Egypt and the European Union.

They expressed satisfaction at the overall developments in the institutional cooperation between the two sides at the political, economic and development levels, especially in light of Sisi’s recent visit to Brussels.

Moreover, the importance of continuing joint coordination and enhancing mutual dialogue in this regard to strengthen the friendly relations between them in light of common challenges was emphasized.
