German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he will work for a stronger and "geopolitical European Union" in face of Russia's war on Ukraine.
In an article published Sunday afternoon in the German newspaper "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung", Scholz wrote that the European Union (EU) must unite its ranks in all areas in which it has not yet reached an agreement on immigration policy, European defense building, technological sovereignty, and democratic flexibility.
He announced that the German government will present specific proposals in this regard "in the following months."
The German Chancellor described the EU as "the living antithesis of imperialism and tyranny," pointing out that this is why it is a thorn in the throat of rulers like Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He warned that "Permanent disunity, permanent dissent between member states weakens us. That is why Europe's most important response to the change of times is: Unity. We absolutely must maintain it and we must deepen it".
Scholz demanded an end to "the selfish obstruction of European decisions by some member states."
He argued that the EU would not be able to afford a national veto if it wanted to continue to be heard in a world of competing for great powers.
"The European Union is more attractive than ever, it is opening up to new members and will reform at the same time," The chancellor said.
