Francisco Sagasti, President of Peru, said today, that his country will stop flights to and from Europe for two weeks.

Also, Sagasti announced that the health, transport and travel authorities have been placed on the highest alert to prevent the transmission of the new strain of the novel Coronavirus that appeared in Britain.

Sagasti added that the country did not receive any direct flights from Britain since December 15, however, the health authorities were monitoring passengers coming from Britain via indirect flights.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said last week that the new strain of Coronavirus led to an accelerated increase in the number of new infections, urging countries around the world to stop flights to and from Britain.

Peru, which has been severely affected by the pandemic and has seen large numbers of injuries and deaths, prevented the entry of non-resident foreigners who have been in Britain during the past two weeks.

Moreover, Lima called on the citizens and the non-residents who are already inside the country after visiting Britain recently to isolate themselves for 14 days.

On Sunday, official figures showed that Peru had recorded 997,517 cases and 37,103 deaths from the Coronavirus pandemic.
