South Korea established official diplomatic relations on Wednesday with Cuba, one of North Korea's Cold War-era allies.

With their United Nations representatives exchanging letters in New York, the two countries have agreed to open diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level, the ministry said in a statement.

Cuba recognized South Korea in 1949, but exchanges between the two countries stopped after the socialist revolution in Cuba in 1959, according to the South Korean News Agency.
