The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Ambassador of the United States of America, Lynn Tracy, and informed strong protest, after what she described as "provocative statements made by the ambassador in support of Vladimir Kara-Murza (accused of espionage and transmission of information for a foreign country in Russia).
The Russian ministry considered Tracy's remarks as interference in Russian affairs.
According to the Russian news agency Novosti the head of the US diplomatic mission, who was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, was informed of the strong protest against statements supporting Kara-Murza, who was convicted of treason and knowingly spreading false information about the Russian army.
The ministry explained that such actions, publicly committed to putting pressure on the Russian authorities and courts, constitute open interference in the internal affairs of Russia.
The Russian Foreign Ministry accused the United States of practicing shameful repression against the American opposition, which makes attempts to protect the "spy" supervised by Washington and other Western capitals look hypocritical and ridiculous.
