"The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations regretfully informs that Yevgeny Zinichev died tragically in the line of duty when he was saving a person's life at interdepartmental drills on protecting the Arctic zone from emergencies", according to a statement from the ministry.
The minister was standing on the edge of a cliff when a cameraman slipped and fell, according to preliminary reports. Zinichev ped from the cliff to save the former from the water, but he collided with a boulder and sustained critical injuries.
Zinichev was appointed Minister of Emergency Situations in 2018 after serving as the Russian Security Service's deputy director.
