Analysis: Russia-Ukraine Crisis Between 'Putin's Victory', 'Kyiv's Survival

Observers say there are possible scenarios in Ukraine between Moscow's victory and Kyiv's survival.

"The fall of Putin "is the scenario that the West dream of.

The west and the United States have targeted the Russian economy with sanctions. They seek to weaken Vladimir Putin's position in an eventual attempt to bring him down.

The army may decide to stop carrying out orders, or the people may rebel against Putin in the midst of a major economic crisis. Businessmen may abandon him after their assets are frozen or confiscated in the world. However, such possibilities remain surrounded by great doubts.

Putin still retains his popularity, although Western financial pressure has turned the Russian political class and the oligarch class into "steadfast supporters" of their president.

On the other hand, Putin dreams of taking Kyiv down. The Russian army is superior to the Ukrainian forces and can compel this country to submit. However, this prospect faces obstacles that many consider insurmountable.

"It is a war that Vladimir Putin cannot win, no matter how long and brutal his means," said British historian Lawrence Friedman of King's College London to France Press on Saturday.

"Entering a city is different from keeping it under control," he noted.

The Ukrainians surprised the Russians and the Europeans, and perhaps themselves, by mobilizing themselves with great devastation and heavy losses.

Ukraine shares a border with four NATO member states that were formerly part of the Soviet Union, for which Putin does not hide his nostalgia. Now that Russia has absorbed Belarus and invaded Ukraine, will it set its sights on Moldova, the tiny country between Ukraine and Romania, and perhaps as far as Georgia on the eastern coast of the Black Sea?

Getting into war is easy, getting out of it is uncertain

Putin made a major escalation by declaring last Sunday to put the nuclear deterrent forces "on special alert", in a worrying situation, but it lacks real credibility, according to the AFP report.

Here, opinions fall into two categories. The first is that Russia may use a bomb that may be "tactical" and therefore limited in scope. Crossing the nuclear threshold would not necessarily mean (...) an immediate nuclear war, but it would constitute a very dangerous turning point in world history."

On the other hand, others show a more reassuring stance. "There is no preparation on the part of the Russian side for a nuclear strike" Putin's comments are "mainly directed at Western audiences to create fear and make chaos."
