The Kremlin has granted humanitarian asylum to Syria’s former president Bashar al-Assad and his family following the collapse of his regime.
According to reports by Russian state news agencies TASS and RIA Novosti on Sunday, Assad and his family are currently in Moscow after being ousted in a military offensive by opposition forces.
A Kremlin source confirmed the arrival of Assad and his family in the Russian capital, stating that the asylum was granted on humanitarian grounds.
This marks a significant development in the aftermath of Assad’s regime, which was overthrown after over a decade of conflict in Syria.
The Kremlin’s decision to provide refuge underscores Russia’s longstanding alliance with Assad throughout the Syrian civil war.
As one of Assad’s key international backers, Moscow played a pivotal role in sustaining his regime militarily and politically.
