The Ukrainian authorities including the Parliament claimed that the Russian forces have appointed a new mayor for the city of Melitopol, Sky News reported on Sunday.

The authorities highlighted that this decision came a day after the Russian forces kidnapped the recently elected mayor of the city Ivan Fedorov.

The newly appointed mayor was Galina Danilchenko, a former member of the city council, according to local reports.

According to Ukrainian sources, the decision of the Russian troops came before the arrival of humanitarian aid to the city.

On Sunday, Ukrainian officials announced that the Mayor of Melitopol city, Ivan Fedorov, was kidnapped by the Russian forces after he refused to cooperate with the army.

Therefore, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry accused Russia of violating the principles of the international laws by such as action.

Shortly, thousands of citizens took the streets, demanding the release of the mayor.

No official response was provided by the Russian side, however, Ukrainian authorities confirmed the incident.
