On Saturday, Romanian Foreign Minister Emil Hurezeanu accused Elon Musk of election interference.
The Romanian official said that Musk's social media posts in support of extremist Romanian politician Călin Georgescu can be considered "a form of interference in another state's internal elections."
Hurezeanu highlighted in an interview with Prima TV that Musk has no formal or official position, despite his major role in Donald Trump's administration.
He added that he had not felt any explicit pressure from American officials to favour Călin Georgescu in the upcoming presidential election.
The minister's statements also came after Bloomberg reported that the Trump administration pushes Romania to accept Georgescu's candidacy in May's presidential election.
Bloomberg also added that Musk had made several posts on his X platform showing support for the former presidential candidate and for far-right movements in Romania.
Musk is "a very powerful figure" with "an important role in the constellation surrounding President Trump," but he is not an "official figure," said Hurezeanu.
Musk's messages are "a form of interference in another state's internal elections", but given that he is "very influential" close to the Oval Office, "we must find our own means of defence, explanation, and context-setting”, he added.
