A major collision involving a bus and a truck in Egypt’s El-Galala village near El-Dabaa city left three individuals dead and another 37 injured on Sunday morning. The calamity unfolded on the bustling coastal international road, causing significant disruption.

The Deputy of the Health and Population Ministry in the Marsa Matrouh governorate affirmed that emergency medical assistance was swiftly provided at the crash site. The injured victims were promptly transferred to El-Dabaa Central Hospital and Ras El-Hekmah Central Hospital's emergency units to receive immediate medical attention.

The official further added that the remains of the three fatalities were under the custodianship of the health inspector and public prosecution.

In the wake of such tragic incidents, Egypt has been making substantial efforts to ameliorate its transportation network and curb the frequency of traffic accidents. The National Road Project, a significant government initiative launched in 2014, serves this purpose.

The initiative's objective is to refurbish and enhance approximately 7,000 kilometres of Egypt's total 23,000-kilometre road network. Additionally, the project has been instrumental in installing sophisticated speed radars and surveillance cameras on highways, ensuring stricter traffic regulation enforcement and tougher penalties for traffic offenders.

August 2022’s report from the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) displayed a promising 9.3 percent reduction in road accident injuries in Egypt for the year 2021, signifying advancements in road safety measures. However, there's still a long way to go as the same report also highlighted a concerning 15.2 percent surge in fatalities, with the death toll rising from 6,164 in 2020 to 7,101 in 2021.
