An estimated 218 million people in the world's population are at risk of severe and frequent flooding due to "plastic waste," a new report says.
According to the British newspaper "The Guardian", this number is equivalent to the population of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany combined.
To determine who is most at risk, researchers from the environmental consulting firm Resource Futures and the international charity Tearfund relied on a study published in 2022 on flood risk and poverty, which identified 1.8 billion people at greater risk in 188 countries.
The researchers found that about 218 million people in the world are at risk of severe and frequent flooding due to "plastic waste".
The report found that about 41 million of these are children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, noting that three-quarters of the most vulnerable people live in Southeast Asia and the Pacific region.
