On Tuesday, the Moroccan scholar and jurist Dr. Idris Azzouzi, who is considered one of the most prominent scholars of Fez, passed away in the city of Fez. He memorized the Holy Quran at a young age and acquired knowledge from the senior sheikhs of the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque. Later, he joined Dar Al-Hadith Al-Hassania in Rabat and continued to acquire knowledge from its sheikhs.

Dr. Azzouzi extensively studied, taught, researched, and produced works related to the books of Usul, based on the Maliki school of thought, the official school of thought of the Moroccan state. He also deeply engaged with the choices of the Moroccan nation represented in the Ash'ari creed and Junaidi Sufism.

Throughout more than six decades, Dr. Azzouzi steadfastly studied all aspects of the Maliki school of thought, believing it to be essential for expressing religious sectarian unity and cultural authenticity, as well as contributing to the building of the Moroccan personality.

Whether through his fatwas, lectures, intellectual productions, or his supervision of the work of students and researchers in the field of Quranic and Hadith sciences and Sunni Sufism, his approach was characterized by moderation, balance, and adherence to religious constants. He firmly believed that adherence to these values was essential for maintaining religious harmony in Moroccan society and guarding against extremism and fanaticism.

Also, the late Moroccan scholar was a renowned preacher at Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and in many mosques in Fez and other cities. He also lectured in numerous countries around the world. In 1993, he received the National Order of Merit, Excellent Class. He dedicated himself to the education sector since Morocco gained independence. He served as a university professor of interpretation, Hadith sciences, and other Sharia subjects at the Faculty of Sharia in Fez for decades, supervising and mentoring numerous scholars, researchers, and thinkers in the field of jurisprudence, hadith, and interpretation.

His academic qualifications include a diploma from the Higher School of Professors in 1960, a license from the Faculty of Sharia in Fez in 1969, a graduation from Dar Al-Hadith Al-Hassania in Rabat in 1976, a postgraduate diploma from Dar Al-Hadith Al-Hassania in 1978, and a state doctorate in Islamic Sharia from Dar Al-Hadith Al-Hassania in 1997.

He has been a professor of higher education at the Faculty of Sharia, Al-Qarawiyyin University since 1979.

Dr. Azzouzi contributed to various regional and national scientific seminars and forums and has published numerous Islamic research and studies in Moroccan magazines. Some of his published scientific works include "Al-Fawaed Al-Jamila ala Al-Ayat Al-Jalilah" by Al-Shoushawi, "The Equipment of the Sincere Disciple" by Sheikh Ahmed Zarrouk, and "Lectures on the Interpretation of the Holy Quran Selected from the Verses of Rulings."

Dr Azzouzi is survived by his sons Dr. Abdelhak Azzouzi, Dr. Hassan Azzouzi, Professor Fouad Azzouzi, and Professor Mohamed Azzouzi.

May he rest in peace, and to God we belong and to Him we shall return.
