Real Madrid have officially announced the appointment of Álvaro Arbeloa as the new head coach of the first team, replacing Spanish coach Xabi Alonso, who left his post unexpectedly following Real Madrid’s 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.

In an official statement, the club confirmed that Arbeloa will take charge of the first team after an impressive coaching journey within Real Madrid.

Since June 2025, he has been managing Real Madrid Castilla and previously worked across various youth levels in the club’s academy since 2020.

Arbeloa’s coaching career began with the Infantil A team in the 2020–2021 season, where he led them to the league title. He then managed Cadete A in the 2021–2022 season, followed by Juvenil A from 2022 to 2025.

During his time with Juvenil A, Arbeloa achieved significant success, including winning a historic treble in the 2022–2023 season, comprising the league, Copa del Rey, and UEFA Youth League, and securing the league title again in 2024–2025.

As a player, Arbeloa is considered one of the key figures of Real Madrid’s golden generation.

He represented the first team from 2009 to 2016, making 238 official appearances and winning eight major titles, including two UEFA Champions League trophies, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, La Liga, two Copa del Rey titles, and the Spanish Super Cup.

On the international stage, Arbeloa was a central part of Spain’s historic era, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the UEFA European Championship in 2008 and 2012, earning 56 caps for La Roja.

Earlier on Monday, Real Madrid confirmed the departure of Xabi Alonso, just 24 hours after the team’s Super Cup defeat to Barcelona. Alonso had taken over as head coach last summer, but inconsistent results and declining performances led the club to end his tenure, paving the way for Arbeloa’s appointment.
