Venice is being hit by heavy rains, triggering flooding that swamped tourist destinations and residential areas, International media reported.
In a video, the rare summer flooding submerged Venice's famed Piazza San Marco in up to three feet of water overnight.
The heavy rain caused flooding in the streets, tourist attractions, and other low-lying areas of the historical city. Meanwhile, children splashed and paddled and tourists waded through, shoes in hand.
It's worth mentioning that the Italian city is often hit by so-called 'Acqua Alta' (high water) in autumn and winter. Devastating floods in November 2019 caused hundreds of millions of euros of damage.
This year, Venice's high water incidents are caused by a combination of factors exacerbated by climate change - from rising sea levels and unusually high tides to land subsidence that has caused the ground level of the city to sink, according to Italian environmentalists.
The environmentalists have also warned that climate change in fragile coastal regions could lead to more floods.
