In televised remarks, Russian president Vladimir Putin announced, on Tuesday, that he doesn’t support imposing sanctions on Georgia, Reuters reported.
"I would not impose anything that could complicate our relations for the sake of restoring full ties," Putin said.
Earlier Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Piskov announced that Russia's parliament has unanimously backed a resolution to impose sanctions on Georgia.
"We can notice the strong reaction of Russian parliamentarians and their consensus on imposing sanctions against Georgia due to the unprecedented behavior of the Georgian TV Host," Piskov said in a press statement.
"The final decision on imposing sanctions on Georgia hasn’t been taken yet. It will probably come from the government and the president,” the spokesman added.
Noteworthy, Georgia’s Rustavi 2 TV station broadcast, on Sunday, a program called Post Scriptum during which the host, speaking in Russian, used offensive language to insult Putin and the Russian people.
Relations between both countries came under fresh strain two weeks ago when anti-Kremlin protests erupted in Tbilisi over a visit by the Russian lawmaker Sergey Gavrilov, who addressed the audience from the Georgian parliamentary speaker’s chair.
