There are great success opportunities that can be achieved from moving towards the green industry, Hosny Mahran, Economics Professor and former Dean of the Faculty of Commerce at Benha University, stated.
Mahran added that the green industry will boost efficiency in utilizing resources and foster industrial productivity.
The industry is believed to be one of the key sectors and economic activities that helped both developed and developing countries worldwide achieve progress and prosperity.
Despite the significant importance of this sector and its contributions to economic development since the first industrial revolution until now, it produced many negative effects, particularly on the environment.
Such unfavorable effects proved the necessity to review industrial activity in order to suit modern trends to shift towards a green economy with its various components as well as meeting the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
On the global level, the manufacturing sector is responsible for consuming more than 35% of the energy, in addition to 20% of the greenhouse gas emissions. It is also accountable for over 25% of primary resource extraction as well as nearly 17% of the world's health problems related to air pollution.
Above 63% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) – which constitute more than 90% of business activities in the world – cause industrial pollution.
Estimations indicated that the industrial sector result in about 14 gigatons of carbon dioxide (CO2) by 2030.
Therefore, there is a need and opportunity to shift towards green industry, which will lower pollution and emissions costs.
The green strategy will also provide benefits at all stages of production processes in a manner that maintains the sustainability of economic resources and thus economic return in general.
