Presidential Decree Puts GEM under Supervision of Antiquities’ Minister

President Abdel Fatah El- Sisi has issued a presidential decree No.9 for 2020 to put the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) under the supervision of the Minister of Antiquities. The decree defines the GEM as a public economic eternity affiliated to the Ministry of Antiquities.

The decree also assures that the GEM is an integrated international complex that aims at presenting the Egyptian civilization and supplying the cultural activities and services for visitors.

Maj. Gen. Atef Moftah, general- supervisor of the GEM, said that the activities of the museum, according the presidential decree, will show collections of artifacts by using the most modern technologies in the world.

The management of the GEM will also assume the responsibility for documenting, keeping, securing, studying, restoring of the newly discovered antiquities within the frame of Law No. 117 for 1983.

The GEM also be authorized to launch forums and conferences, inform the young generation and society of the Egyptian civilization.

Moftah pointed out that the management of the GEM comprises the Board of Trustees, the Executive Officer (CEO) and the Board of Directors.

The President of the Republic presides over the Board of Trustees which is responsible for drawing the general policies and planning for the GEM.

Minister of Antiquities chairs Board of Directors comprising at least ten members and not more than twenty persons of senior specialists and international expertise.

The Board of Directors supervises the implementing of policies and strategies adopted by the Board of Trustees.

The GEM will have an independent budget like other public economic utilities.
