The Polish Ambassador in Cairo H.E. Michał Łabenda indicated that his country had 8 reception points supporting border crossing points, where refugees can obtain information, as well as get access to meals, rest, and emergency medical assistance.
According to a statement released by Polish Embassy in Cairo, Łabenda said: "For many weeks Poland has been developing a system in case of a refugee crisis related to a potential invasion of Russia on Ukraine. Therefore, only 4 hours after the outbreak of the war, we had 8 reception points supporting border crossing points, where refugees couldobtain information, as well as get access to meals, rest, and emergency medical assistance."
"A mechanism for coordinating humanitarian aid was created, supported by the central budget, local government budgets, and social and private funds. The assistance is directed both to persons residing in Ukraine and those already present in Poland.
This includes, inter alia, temporary accommodation for people who do not have the possibility to stay; universal access to free medical care and the Polish health care system; free travel means are available; facilitated access to the labor market; support for learning for students coming from abroad – people of compulsory school age are admitted to public schools; people who do not speak Polish can learn it; psychological and pedagogical help is also provided," the statement explained.
In the same connection, Łabenda noted that Polish authorities have immediately launched aid mechanisms, showing solidarity at every level - political, state, and human, adding that the telephone operators provide a free starter with call packages to Ukraine.
The Polish official mentioned that his country welcomes the citizens of every country, regardless of their citizenship, race or religion, that have been staying on the territory of Ukraine and want to leave the war zone.
"They are allowed to enter Poland for a period not exceeding 15 days without the need to obtain a visa and only on the basis of a document that reliably confirms their identity (even if its expiry date has passed)."
Moreover, he noted that they are exempted from COVID requirements and that no fees are collected.
"As on 02.03, through 9 working border crossing points with Ukraine more than 470 thousand people have entered the Polish territory since the outbreak of war. Among them, there is a group of Egyptians numbering around 500 people. We are in close contact with the Egyptian Embassy in Warsaw to make the process maximally effective."
"The Egyptian Embassy confirms that the flow of Egyptian citizens to the borders is increasing by hundreds while the treatment from the Polish side and hospitality are highly appreciated," he said.
The Embassy is currently arranging accommodation for the Egyptian citizens when they contact it, and many of them left Poland via regular flights. The rest are being gathered to reach enough number to take a collective action concerning their travel back home.
The central aid system, being coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Chancellery of the Prime Minister of Poland, also directs the help to Ukraine.
Every day from Poland set off humanitarian convoys, prepared and financed by the Polish government but also by non-governmental and charity organizations.
Noteworthy is the grass-roots help that private inpiduals voluntarily provide, offering all kinds of help - from financial contributions, to direct provision of accommodation, meals, medical services, etc. within the scope of their own abilities.
The statement also noted that the willingness to help is so great that a special coordinating platform has been created for the most effective provision of assistance http://pomagamukrainie.gov.pl
