In an official statement on Sunday, the Arab League, through its Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, welcomed a decision issued by the African Union summit in Addis Ababa to suspend Israel’s membership in the 55-member bloc, calling it a “corrective procedure."
This step comes in line with the historical positions of the AU supporting the Palestinian cause against colonialism and and racial segregation.
This decision came as a result of the diplomatic efforts made by Egypt and Algeria which closed the doors in the face of the Israeli infiltration into the African continent, through the Ethiopian gate, and subject to US pressures.
We fully agree with what Mohamed Shtayyeh, the Palestinian Prime Minister, who represented Palestine at this AU summit, said, “Giving Israel the status of observer is an undeserved reward for the violations it commits against the Palestinian people.”
It is nice that this strong and just position by the AU came, a few days after the release of the documented Amnesty International resolution, which classifies the occupying country as a country that practices policies of racial discrimination (apartheid) against the Palestinian people in all the occupied Arab lands, including Ethnic cleansing, land confiscation, house demolitions, and field executions.
“The Israel question has been suspended for now and instead there will be a committee set up to study the issue,” a diplomat told AFP on the closing day of the AU’s annual summit in Addis Ababa. The committee will present its findings at next year’s AU summit, according to media reports.
“The committee will be composed of eight heads of state and governments, and will present its recommendations at the next summit,” the AU’s newly elected Chairman Macky Sall said.
South Africa and Algeria opposed the move initiated by Moussa Faki, chair of the AU Commission, to accredit Israel, while Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo supported the move.
It's noteworthy that the AU had rejected two previous accreditation applications by Israel in 2013 and 2016.
Last year, Egypt and other six countries (Algeria, Comoros, Tunisia, Djibouti, Mauritania, and Libya) reportedly delivered a verbal protest note to Faki in Addis Ababa.
Israel question threatens to pide the AU between supporters and opposition. This dispute was set in motion in July last year when Faki accepted unilaterally the Zionist entity's accreditation to the bloc, triggering protests by several member states.
I believe that the infiltration attempts of Israel into Africa will not stop at this step, rather it will try more harder to appease many countries in the continent before the next summit.
The above lines elaborated the current situation well, but the future is still vague. The expulsion is the only solution to avoid any potential rift between the African countries.
The rift, debate and state of vagueness are the outcomes of any Israeli presence. Thus, to avoid such situation, we have to expel Israel. Let's keep a distance with Israel and maintain the relationship as it is at the present time.
