On Tuesday, Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) issued a press release on the occasion of "World Press Freedom Day", which was adopted by UNESCO in 1993 and annually celebrated on May 3.

The history of World Press Freedom Day goes back to a conference held by UNESCO. The conference was held to develop a free, independent, and multiple press.

Thirty years after the adoption of this conference, the historical relationship between the freedom to seek, transmit and receive information on one hand and the public interest, on the other hand, is still equally respected.

A series of celebrations will be held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration during the International Conference for World Press Freedom Day.

Among the most important statistical indicators are the following:

  • Number of published public newspapers reached 61, compared to 59 public newspapers in 2020, with an increase of 3.4%.
  • Number of periodicals (general or specialized nature topics) for sectors (governmental/public/public business that is issued locally) reached 39 periodicals in 2021.
  • Number of distributed copies of public newspapers locally and abroad reached 252.1 million copies in 2021, compared to 199.1 million copies in 2020, an increase of 26.6%.

  • Number of periodicals issued locally by the private sector reached 56, while 31 were distributed externally for 2021.
