On Occasion of International Women's Day, 60% Women’s Participation in 2024 Presidential Elections

Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) issued a press release on the occasion of "International Women's Day", which is celebrated annually on March 8 in appreciation of the role and women's contribution to achieving sustainable development.

The day was celebrated for the first time on March 8, 1909, when thousands of female textile workers demonstrated in the streets of New York streets, carrying dry bread and bouquets of roses.

As march demanded reducing working hours, stopping child labor, and granting women the right to vote.

The “Bread and Roses” movement marked the beginning of the feminist movement within the United States demanding all basic rights for women, including political rights and equality in working conditions.

The first celebration of this occasion was in commemoration of those feminists then the movement itself spread to Europe until the day was adopted worldwide.

On this day, CAPMAS issues a press release reviewing the conditions of Egyptian women in various fields, this year2024 celebration is under the slogan “Investment in women to accelerate the pace of progress.”

The number of Egyptians living in Egypt reached ( 105.9 million) females representing 51.5 million or 48.6%. The percentage of gender reached 106 % (meaning that there are 106 males for every 100 females).

According to the annual bulletin for enrolled students - Faculty members of higher education data 2022/2023. The percentage of females enrolled in higher education was 48.8%, compared to 51.2 % for males.

According to preliminary data of the Labor Force Survey in 2023. Women's Contribution to the workforce was 15.9 % of the total workforce (15 years and over) compared to 69.6% for men.

The unemployment rate for females was 17.8%, compared to 4.7% for males. The percentage of female workers (15 years and over) was 13.1% compared to 66.3% for males. The percentage of females working in permanent work was 85.3%, compared to 60.5% for males.

The percentage of women occupying specialists and scientific professions is 30.6% of total employment. 8.7% of women were in charge of editing/clerical work 10.8% of technicians and assistant technicians, 18.1% of women working in agriculture and fishing, then women workers in services and shops selling recorded at 18.3%, and the lowest percentage was 2.0% working in craftswomen profession and related category.

Women in decision-making positions in 2021/2024: Women got 6 ministerial portfolios within the council of ministers 18% of number of ministers in the government. Women in Parliament won 162 seats (14 female candidates, 148 masters in electoral) representing 27% in the House of Representatives. 60% percentage of women’s participation in the presidential elections in 2024, as the number of women entitled to vote in the elections was estimated at 26 million, or 48.5% of the number of voters, including about 15 million young women, and about 11 million elderly women.

Economic empowerment: The Council completed the activities of the Tahwisha Digital Savings and Lending Program, through a qualified work team of 1,340 financial facilitators, field supervisors, and governorate supervisors, and provided them with the opportunity to work in the project as change agents and financial facilitators118,704 women continue to form savings groups in 13 governorates.

Social empowerment: Raising awareness and education about the concept of the population issue and the social and economic effects of population increase, through the “Dawar Sessions” program, where (12,395) Dawar sessions were implemented. Participation in the activities of the Green Minds Initiative, targeting primary school students (1800 students).

(91,937) beneficiaries benefited from Dowi’s interactive activities (story circles for girls and boys in schools and parents, viewing clubs), which aimed to encourage girls to express their opinions, hopes, and fears and share stories and experiences to empower them within their local communities.

Protection field: Launching an initiative under the title “Ambassadors Against Circumcision,” which includes an elite group of religious leaders from Al-Azhar, the Endowments, the Egyptian Church with its three denominations, social and health specialists concerned with female circumcision issue.

Implementing the extended door-knocking campaign “Protect her from circumcision,” which reached 3,374,956 beneficiaries.

Training 200 religious leaders and figures to use various training methods, such as simulation models and group activities.
