The New York Times (NYT) said a slew of videos that appeared on social media outlets last week has sparked a debate about whether Ukrainian forces committed war crimes or "acted in self-defense" as they tried to capture a group of Russian soldiers who were later killed.

Videos showed scenes before and after a confrontation earlier this month in which at least 11 Russians were killed, most of whom appeared to be lying on the ground, apparently shot at close range after a Russian fighter suddenly opened fire on Ukrainian soldiers. They stand next to them.

The NYT added that the videos, which have been verified, provide a rare look at what is happening in the war, but they do not show how or why the soldiers were killed. In the end, it leaves a mystery that both sides have exploited in an electronic battle for support.
