Military sources told Reuters that Nigerian army chief Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru was killed in a plane crash on Friday during an official visit to the northern state of Kaduna, which has seen security challenges in recent months.
The Air Force said that his plane had crashed near Kaduna Airport and that it was investigating the direct cause of the crash.
The accident comes three months after a small Nigerian Air Force passenger plane crashed just outside Abuja airport after an alleged engine failure, killing all seven of its passengers.
Sources said that the army general and his aides were killed when an Air Force plane crashed on Friday.
President Muhammadu Buhari appointed Atahiro along with other military commanders in January after years of mounting criticism over the spread of violence by Islamist rebels and gangs.
