A new wave of coronavirus (known also as COVID-19) infections is rapidly sweeping across Asia, prompting authorities to appeal to residents from New Zealand to Japan to take preventive measures to slow the outbreak and help health care systems avoid collapsing under pressure.

The current increase in the number of infections, most of which is due to the prevalence of the two sub-variables “B. A4 and B. A5 from the Omicron mutant presents an additional challenge to authorities still trying to address the economic fallout from previous waves of the pandemic.

The Asian governments seek to avoid extending or re-imposing restrictions that are unpopular among the people.

Australia also warned that it could experience its worst outbreak of Covid-19 in the next few weeks due to the spread of the B sub-variables. A4 and B. A.5.”

The Australian authorities said they expected to record "millions" of new infections, but they ruled out imposing any strict restrictions to contain the spread.

Mainland China also records more than 300 locally transmitted infections per day in July, up from about 70 per day in June, as Beijing's strict policy known as "zero COVID" helps keep the disease under control and prevents hospital overcrowding.

Yesterday, the Indian Ministry of Health announced the registration of 20,139 new cases of the  Coronavirus during the past 24 hours, which is the highest daily infection toll recorded since last February.
