Executive Director of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (MSMEDA) Ms. Nevine Gamea emphasized that MSMEDA performs its assigned tasks under an integrated system the Egyptian Government is developing to improve living standards for thousands of people in unplanned areas through introducing infrastructure and creating the appropriate environment that encourages start-up enterprises.

MSMEDA Executive Director lauded continuous cooperation binding MSMEDA with Ministry of International Cooperation, particularly, on concluding agreements with international donor agencies with a view to serving the Egyptian society. Gamea also voiced appreciation for the support given by these donor agencies, mainly, the European Union (EU) and French Development Agency (AFD) to improve services in the neediest communities.

These statements were made in the speech given by Ms. Gamea during the celebration organized on completing Phase 1 and launching Phase 2 of the Unplanned Areas Upgrading and Employment Enhancement Program (UAUEEP) in Cairo and Giza governorates.

The Celebration was held in the presence of Cairo Governor General Khaled Abdel Aal, Giza Governor General Ahmed Rashed, Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt Ambassador Christian Berger, AFD Regional Director for North Africa Mathieu Vasseur, and Deputy Head of Mission in the Embassy of France in Cairo Raphael Martin de Lagarde.

Gamea said the Unplanned Areas Upgrading and Employment Enhancement Program has been executed in four areas in Cairo and Giza in which 570 households have already benefited from the implementation of its projects, mainly, in Ezbet Khairallah and El Zawya El Hamrah in Cairo and Ard El Lewa and Mit Uqba in Giza.

MSMEDA Executive Director added that urban and community development projects implemented within these four targeted areas have sored up to 35 projects of which 15 in Cairo and 20 in Giza totaling around 268 million Egyptian Pounds and generating more than 320 thousand daily jobs for casual workers.

Such targeted areas, Gamea explained, have witnessed a noticeable development that has been manifested in the provision of basic services like renovating potable water and sewage networks, paving roads, introducing lighting works, installing water tanks, upgrading tunnels and bridges, refurbishing schools and health units, and organizing vocational training courses for women on handicraft skills…

MSMEDA Executive Director uttered MSMEDA's keenness on furthering cooperation with development partners, especially, on phase 2 of the Unplanned Areas Upgrading and Employment Enhancement Program given that the EU and AFD are main and decades-long donor agencies and partners. Gamea, moreover, accentuated such partnership will contribute to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is already a step that reinforces Egyptian efforts to eradicate slum and unplanned areas.
