Melania Trump, the wife of outgoing US President Donald Trump, has violated presidential norms in the U.S. after she neglected to speak with the new first lady, Jill Biden.
In an interview, The daughter of President-elect Joe Biden and Dr Jill Biden confirmed that no invitation had been sent from Melania inviting the new first lady for tea and a tour to the white house, in accordance with the 'traditional protocol'.
“I don’t think they’re doing the traditional protocol, which is unfortunate,” Biden told NBC, but noted that her family is “all OK with it.”
She also suggested that Melania would not participate in Biden's inauguration, in line with her husband's decision; a precedent that had not occurred in 150 years in the US.
On Wednesday, outgoing U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will leave for their new residence in Florida at 8:00 am EST (3:00 pm Cairo Local Time), the white house revealed in a statement.
Biden’s inauguration is scheduled for Wednesday at 12:00 pm EST (6:00 CLT).
The outgoing president will not meet Biden or even attend the swearing-in ceremony as usual in the handover of power. Instead, Trump intends to travel to Florida.
Later today, Biden will take the oath as the new US president. Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris is to be sworn in alongside him in Washington DC, which has been fortified amid fears of civil unrest.
